Knee Replacement Surgery Introduction

Knee replacement surgery is a method to replace a damaged or worn knee joint with an artificial joint. The medical term for this type of surgery is ‘arthroplasty’.

Knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) aims to relieve knee pain and improve movement.

Is knee replacement common?
Knee replacement surgery is now as common as hip replacement surgery, with over 70,000 knee replacements carried out in England and Wales during 2007.
How long does a knee replacement last?
A replacement knee will not last forever, but your artificial knee will probably last you at least 10-15 years, depending on how active you are and the type of replacement you have.

This video shows a minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery of the knee in order to carry out a knee joint replacement. The procedure has been carried out at the Washington Hospital at The Centre of Joint Replacement.

Types of Knee Joint Replacement

July 31st, 2008

Different Surgeons favour different types of surgical knee implants. However, your consultant would advise you on the ideal knee replacement prosthesis for your individual condition.

The two important variations are the adhesives that are used – some utilise chemical bonds, which enable joints to grow into the prosthesis to maintain the joint.

The other uses cement to hold the position of the prosthesis, but these have been said to yield an expectancy of about 10 years after which replacement may be necessary.

Other common definitions of Knee Joint Replacement:

Total knee replacement

This is usually important to carry out should a large portion or the complete Knee Joint is damaged.

Half knee replacement

Also referred to as ‘unicompartmental’ or ‘unicondylar’ knee replacement. Only undertaken if just a part of the Knee Joint is damaged.

Knee Replacement - Whats Involved

July 29th, 2008

A knee replacement surgery is the exchange of damaged or worn sections of the knee joint with a prosthesis. This  knee replacement prosthesis may be constituted of plastic and metal parts.

The knee joint is a junction of the thigh bone and shin, which normally work together because they are covered by the articular cartilage which acts as an absorption of shocks. Damage of this cartilage can make the knee joint painful and difficult to use. A new knee joint would in this case aid mobility and help reduce pain caused by friction of the two bone endings.

Whether a total or a half knee replacement is advised is based on the condition of your Knee Joint.
